| | Riedel's 3 Generation Tasting Set
The Riedel family of Austria is a renowned dynasty when it comes to high-quality crystal wine glasses: 11 generations of Riedels have had their hand in the design process. It was 9th-generation Claus Josef Riedel who revolutionized the wine industry by designing the shape of a glass to best enhance the type of wine it would hold. This set of three famous Riedel glasses includes Claus Josef's magnificent Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru, which stands 9-3/4 inches tall and holds a whopping 37 ounces. Designed in 1958 and on permanent display in the New York Museum of Modern Art, this flared-lip, wide-bodied glass appreciates Red Burgundy, Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Beaujolais, and other reds. Developed for true connoisseurs, the top-of-the-line Sommeliers series is Riedel's only hand-blown crystal collection.
Next, from the machine-made, full-lead crystal Vinum collection, developed by 10th-generation Georg Josef to be affordable as well as flavor-enhancing, comes the 1986 Vinum Bordeaux glass, which stands 8-7/8 inches tall and holds 21-1/2 ounces at full capacity. This is a beautifully balanced glass meant for Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, among others. And finally, from 11th-generation Maximilian, born in 1977, who set a hot new trend in wine drinking with his 2004 introduction of the stemless O series, comes the spherical O Chardonnay tumbler, designed to fit compellingly in the palm and stash away in a picnic basket. Sure to elicit "O"s at dinner parties, the O Chardonnay holds 20-3/4 ounces and measures 3-5/8 inches high.
